Touching Up Your Hasty Bake's Powder Coat
While powder coating is one of the most effective ways to seal steel and mitigate rust, occasionally the environment a grill resides in (under cover vs no cover, ground moisture, high humidity locations, etc) will affect the longevity of the powder coated steel. Here's some repair tips to ensure that, if rust does occur, it's handled correctly, so as to extend the life of your investment.
1. Purchase a Hasty Bake Touch-Up Kit.
2. Use included scraper to remove any loose powder coating from around the affected area. Be sure to inspect the whole grill. Rust is most likely to form on the bottom edges of the grill (especially when ground moisture is present), along the firedoor floorboard (where ash likes to fall when the firebox is pulled out), and along the ashpan rail runners (where ash is always present).
Remember that moisture and ash can become corrosive and eat through the powdercoat much quicker. Also ensure the inside and outside of your grill remain as dry as possible by using a cover, cleaning out ash frequently, and inspecting for potential rust every few months.
3. Using a fine grit sandpaper, lightly sand any area where rust is found. This will ensure that it cannot continue to expand underneath the powdercoat.
4. Clean the area with mineral spirits (or a damp cloth) to remove any rust dust and dry thoroughly.
5. Tape/block off good powdercoat and spray the affected area with high temp stove paint. Several lighter coats will seal better than a heavy coat. Allow 6 hours to dry and 48 hours to cure.
6. Continue enjoying your Hasty Bake!
